What is Myofascial Release?

Myofascial release is a gentle, hands on therapy used to help relieve pain and alleviate several health issues. It helps restore the body to an optimum level of wellness. It is effective for all ages including infants.

When Should I Use Myofascial Release Techniques?

Myofascial Release may help relieve the following range of disorders including:
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Myofascial Pain Syndrome
  • Back pain including disc problems
  • Neck pain, whiplash
  • Migraines and other headaches
  • Temporal-Mandibular Joint Disease (TMJ)
  • Pelvic and vaginal pain and other conditions
  • Incontinence and urinary issues
  • Sports injuries
  • Chronic pain
  • Neurological problems
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Adhesions and scar pain
  • Scoliosis
  • Women's health problems including menstrual problems and endometriosis
  • Lymphedema
  • Trauma

How Does Myofascial Release Work?

Fascia is a web-like tissue, which covers and interconnects every part of the human body. Fascia is one continuous tissue. It is stretchy, wavy, and flexible when healthy.

Disruptions in fascia can affect the entire body. They may be mechanical in nature; caused by injuries, inflammation or surgery. Unhealthy fascia may result from disease, stress or emotional trauma.

Fascia, which is unwell, becomes tight and rigid. Pain, diminished function, and weakness develop. Diverse symptoms may occur depending upon what areas of the fascia are compromised.

Damage to fascia does not show up on conventional imaging equipment like x-rays or CT scans. Therefore, conventional practitioners can often mis-diagnose fascia problems.

What Happens during a Myofascial Release Session?

After obtaining your medical history from you, myofascial release experts gently palpate and assess areas of your body to determine where fascial problems exist. They then gently apply hand pressure for up to two minutes to an appropriate area. The practitioner releases pressure and moves on to the next area until the fascia releases and healing begins.

Results can be obtained instantly however repeated treatments may be required to restore full health. Myofascial stretching techniques can be learned as well. Several athletes find them beneficial.

What Else Should I know about Myofascial Release?

Myofascial release is gentle enough for babies as well as debilitated, frail people.

Myofascial release promotes comfort and flexibility, while improving stability of tissues and organs within the entire body. A person may seek treatment for relief of specific symptoms, and discover that as a result of Myofascial Release their entire body feels and functions well.
