What is Botanical Medicine?

Botanical medicine is the use of plant extracts for medicinal purposes. It has also been called herbal medicine. It is both an art and a science, which uses plants to prevent and treat disease. Botanical medicines have the power to treat many symptoms, with minimal risk of side effects. They can be used to treat symptoms as well as be a preventative. In fact, many every-day pharmaceuticals contain plant-derived agents and/or materials.

What is Botanical Medicine Used to Treat?

Botanical Medicine is a safe, effective means of relieving symptoms, preventing illness and supplying nutrients to the body. Botanical medicines provide alternatives to using pharmaceutical drugs to treat a vast variety of health conditions. Botanical medicines can also provide supportive therapy when conventional medications are administered for serious illnesses. Botanical medicines are well tolerated by people of all ages, including infants and the elderly.

How do Botanical Medicines Work?

Botanical medicines work in a variety of ways. Different herbs have diverse healing properties. For example, there are some that soothe, others that reduce blood pressure, and still others that stimulate digestion. There are herbs that influence every system of the body.

Herbal medicine practitioners often use herbs in conjunction with nutritional and other approaches to optimize wellness. Botanical medicines stimulate the body's own healing powers. They do not just relieve symptoms. Prescribers of botanical therapies consider the needs of the entire person, not just the symptoms.

For over 75% of the people in the world today, botanical medicine is the primary source of medicine used. It has century long traditions of use.

Several kinds of botanical medicine exist. Some practitioners are experts using western herbs. Other types like Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine are available as well.

All herbalists conduct extensive interviews with a variety of other assessment techniques prior to recommending botanicals. In addition to herbalists, naturopaths, chiropractors, physicians, and acupuncturists are some of the professionals who use botanical medicine.

Botanical medicines are gentler then conventional medications, yet just as effective. They excel at relieving chronic illnesses which pharmaceuticals are often poor at.

Beyond just treating symptoms, botanical medicines can nourish and restore health to the entire body, based upon the needs of the individual. Chemical-based pharmaceutical drugs are hard for the body to utilize and eliminate. They may relieve symptoms of one problem, while causing distress to another part of the body, such as the liver. Botanical medicines are natural and typically easy for the body to use.

Important: Like anything you take or consume for medicinal purposes, always check with a licensed naturopath or physician first. Every person is unique and may react differently to certain botanicals or combinations of botanicals taken with other botanicals or pharmaceuticals.
